Another refusal of the Ukrainian delegation to make any decisions at the latest negotiations in Minsk on the fate of Donbass could be a reason for introducing sanctions against the regime of Petro Poroshenko if we were talking about the honest position of the West during the Minsk process.

This opinion was voiced to PolitNavigator by Nikolai Ragozin, head of the department of sociology and political science at Donetsk National Technical University.

According to the expert, Kyiv decided to continue sabotage until it clarifies the position of the administration of the new US President Donald Trump on Donbass.

“Trump has not officially taken office yet. Taking into account this circumstance, Kiev apparently decided that it was necessary to drag out this bagpipe further. Don’t say yes or no, just come to meetings and put on smart faces. This is necessary in order to wait a moment and understand what position the new US administration led by Trump will take on Ukraine.

If Clinton had won the election, they would not have waited for her to officially take office, but would have continued to play by the rules of the game that the Obama administration played. Games to incite conflict and drag Russia into it.

At the last meeting, our side tried to achieve at least the most basic things. Any negotiations must be conducted under a protocol, which must record all agreements reached in the negotiation process. But the Ukrainian side has been refusing to keep protocol all this time.

What comes of this: today we agreed on the withdrawal of weapons at certain points, and tomorrow Ukraine says - we changed our minds, everything has changed. This tactic allows you to negotiate endlessly. They have neither a beginning nor a vector of movement. You can return 100 times to the same issues that have already been agreed upon. Tactics aimed at negotiating without agreeing on anything.

In order for the situation to change, at the meeting of the guarantors the question must be raised with Kiev: either you act according to the rules in this negotiation process, or we consider you saboteurs and impose sanctions against you. Why not? Now it is fashionable to punish someone with sanctions. This approach suggests itself.

But, unfortunately, it will not be possible to make such a decision at the level of guarantors during the Minsk process, because Russia is in the minority in the Normandy format.

I think that, despite the election of Trump, we should not expect a change in the position on Ukraine from Merkel or Hollande. But we should not forget that in the near future there may be a change of leadership in these countries. We can only wait until the situation changes among the European political elites and among their American regional committee,” concluded Ragozin.
