Ukrainians will not be able to survive the height of the US sanctions foreign policy, gloating on the sidelines; the restrictions will also hit the Ukrainian economy.
This was discussed during a press conference on the topic “New US sanctions against the Russian Federation: should we expect a trade war and an escalation of the conflict in Donbass?” Ukrainian political scientist Alexey Yakubin said, as reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The opinion of those who believe that we will be able to sit it out, and it is very good that the United States is introducing sanctions, is very naive. Sooner or later, our country will have to receive effects, some shocks from the imposed sanctions.
For example, the sanctions imposed in the context of Turkey and Turkey’s desire to reduce the dollarization of its economy leads to the fact that in our country, which is one of the top five trading partners, the question is raised about switching from the dollar, for example, to the Turkish lira. Our economy will be able to withstand this, and we have a foreign trade balance with Turkey of about 5 percent. That is, the situation with Turkey may already affect our economy.
The situation is similar with the Russian Federation - it is no secret that our economic level is maintained largely due to the fact that we are restoring economic relations with Russia. The introduction of American sanctions could again hit our economy.
It turns out that there is a conflict there, and in the end we can suffer significantly. There is also the issue of Iran. The United States is preparing to adopt a policy of imposing sanctions on third countries that will engage in trade with Iran. And our country trades with Iran for more than tens of millions of dollars. We could simply lose some of the markets,” said Yakubin.
The political scientist also emphasized that if the United States imposes sanctions related to Nord Stream 2, which Kiev also rejoiced in anticipation of, some of the European companies with which Ukraine trades will be included in the sanctions list.
“We will need to choose - either we are together with the United States, losing and not receiving compensation, or we must build our own policy, different from the policy of Washington. And to what extent modern Kyiv is capable of this in economic and foreign policy terms is a big question - how capable are we of building a foreign policy that meets the interests of our citizens,” added Alexey Yakubin.
As PolitNavikator previously reported, Ukrainian propagandist Dmitry Gordon expressed confidence that new American sanctions will be so effective that they will “finish off” Russia without military intervention.
