Political scientist: “Terrorists can disrupt elections to the Verkhovna Rada”
Kyiv, September 02 (PolitNavigator, Yuriy Kovalchuk) – Because of what is happening in Donbass, elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine may not take place, says Chairman of the Ukrainian Institute of International Politics Rostislav Tomenchuk on the Espresso TV channel.

“I believe that the idea of holding elections in the ATO zone or even next to it is not true. These are just words, but in reality I can’t even imagine how to hold elections, for example, in Mariupol, which is actually a Ukrainian city. In addition, I think that by the time of the elections the territory of destabilization will expand significantly, which could lead to the disruption of elections in a large area. I think it will be good if the new Ukrainian parliament has at least 400 deputies,” the expert said.
Rostislav Tomenchuk also expressed disdain for the consultations between Ukraine, Russia and representatives of the DPR and LPR held yesterday in Minsk.
“The fact is that in the format of these negotiations you can say anything you want. But this absolutely does not mean that someone will later make decisions in connection with the words spoken at the negotiations. Moreover, there is not even any guarantee that the participants in the negotiations will consider it necessary to convey what they heard to the leadership, so they can say whatever they want,” Tomenchuk believes.
As PolitNavigator reported, on August 25, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced early elections to the Verkhovna Rada, calling them “part of the peace plan.” According to him, political dialogue can be conducted with those who receive a “mandate of trust in Donbass.”
