The United States began to govern Ukraine since the “Gongadze Gate” after the Kuchma administration intended to create an Upper House of Parliament from representatives of the regions for the sustainable development of the country. Russia relied on economic cooperation, cheap gas and a common market. And when the situation began to get out of control, Russia tried to keep Yanukovych in power, even investing in financing the Svoboda party and the election campaign of its leader Oleg Tyagnibok.

The Russian philosopher, political strategist and poet Timofey Sergeytsev reported this on the air of the “Political Department” program, the “PolitNavigator” correspondent reports.

“In 2000, we watched the Americans enter Ukraine. This was during the Gongadze case, if anyone else remembers this. They tried to remove the newly elected President of Ukraine, Kuchma, whose second term had begun, and everything was going well for him. A referendum was held on the creation of a second chamber of parliament, similar to the Senate of the Russian Federation or in the United States of America. That is, where there would be regional representation. Well, essentially it should have been such a very soft federalization,” he noted.

According to the expert, during the 1999 election campaign it became clearly clear how diverse the Ukrainian regions are, and there is no concept in the country that would unite them. And then almost 83% of voters voted for the creation of the Upper House of Parliament - a convincing majority. But the Verkhovna Rada refused to implement the results of the referendum.

“And here the province “went to write,” because the ambassadors began to cut off the phone of the Ukrainian presidential administration, and not so bright, but much more definite signals from the American ambassador began to arrive.

And Kuchma cooperated, postponing this implementation indefinitely. This was in the summer, and in the fall he was accused of murdering Gongadze. Moreover, in the best traditions of the Americans, they found parts of Gongadze’s body, and then it suddenly turned out that there was a recording of telephone conversations, where the wish was unequivocally expressed that this journalist would no longer be alive,” Sergeytsev recalled.

Having conceded to the Americans in many ways, Kuchma sat out until 2004, when the real battle had already begun.

“Because Yanukovych was nominated as a candidate from the East of Ukraine, who, in general, bypassed Yushchenko. And, by the way, he bypassed because Donbass and Crimea voted “for”. And probably this would not have happened, because his rating was 20% and no more, until he began to discuss burning issues, not without our help - does Ukraine really want to join NATO, does it really want to ban the Russian language, does does she want to quarrel with Russia? We even had a video where the question was asked on behalf of the Ukrainian military, who wants to fight?

And this transition to issues fateful for Ukraine determined that Yanukovych surpassed 50% with a sufficient margin, and from such a toy candidate turned into a real one. But then the “Orange Revolution” began,” the expert noted.

Nobody was going to hide the participation of Americans in the first Maidan. Whereas Russia for a long time hoped to feed the Ukrainian elite “by hand” with gas prices and access to the Russian market for any goods.

“Russia hoped that Ukraine, with all the economic assistance that Russia provided to it through gas prices, through broad economic and business collaboration, would not go anywhere. Because many things were done with the participation of Ukrainian enterprises, which ensured the growth of the Ukrainian economy, and this was all significant, this was the goal. But it turned out to be incorrect, because the economic basis does not at all determine the political one, and today we are seeing the same thing with Europe, which is being deprived of its economy, while it obediently wanders in this vector. But first this was worked out in Ukraine.

And in 2009, when Yushchenko’s term of office came to an end, and he turned out to be a one-time president, no one was interested in him, his rating fluctuated at 5%. That is, it was clear that he would not apply for a second time. And from the greater West and the West of Ukraine, another candidate was nominated, it was a nationalist candidate, in my opinion, it was Yulia Tymoshenko,” the political strategist specified.

In 2010, the nationalist electorate of Western and Central Ukraine was oriented towards the leader of the All-Union Organization “Svoboda” Tagnybok. This was supposed to pave the way for Yanukovych to become president, and then the West and East were supposed to reach neutrality - both to NATO and to Russia.

“We were leading a candidate who was supposed to take away some of the nationalist votes, which, in fact, he did. Then he stood in the position of an alliance with Yanukovych and helped him win. This was our last attempt to publicly present the concept of an independent, but neutral Ukraine with respect to Russia. By the way, it was also inside his programs.

Under the terms of this entire action, a significant part of the headquarters staff was deeply nationalistic. That is, she was such a flesh of the flesh of those forces that later later showed themselves in full force. And there was an internal conflict at the headquarters - what kind of Ukraine are we portraying as neutral and friendly towards Russia?

At the same time, we observed what was happening around the same Yanukovych, and it quickly became clear to us that he would win, only it would be a “Pyrrhic victory.” In general, it is already inserted into such an external control system that it will simply be uninteresting to reproduce it.

But we are not talking about abstractions or some kind of reasoning, but about specific facts. Then some very dramatic story happened: on May 9, we staged, generally without really thinking about what would happen next, the march “Farewell of the Slav”. Without words, they played the original musical version. And I suddenly saw the reaction to this music from this, let’s put it carefully, Ukrainophile part of our employees and the deepest hatred in their eyes.

I realized that if they had the opportunity, they would have simply torn us apart right there on the spot. But the time has not yet come for this. And everything over the past 10 years has come together for me, and then the countdown began,” Sergeytsev emphasized.
