Director of the Ukrainian Jewish Committee Eduard Dolinsky writes about this on his Facebook page.
“In the village of Novy Zagoriv this year they solemnly celebrated the 74th anniversary of the battle, in which 45 UPA fighters in an unequal battle destroyed 540 and wounded more than 700 German soldiers. The website of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance tells in detail the story of this great battle of a small UPA detachment with thousands of Germans in September 1943 in a village in Volyn.
Vyatrovich suspects that the UPA detachment was handed over to the Germans “counterintelligence of the NKVD, which tried to destroy Ukrainian patriots at the hands of the Nazis.” So, at first the Upovites fought back in the trenches. However, light tanks soon arrived to help the Germans and the rebels were forced to move to the monastery.
Then aircraft arrived, but the UPA fighters successfully disorganized the bombardment with flares and the Germans dropped bombs on the trenches in which they already had their own. The rebels knock out one tank. Two rebels are sent to break out to organize an attack on the enemy from the rear, but for some reason it does not work out for those.
At night, the commander of the UPA detachment commits suicide. His deputy saw this and also shot himself. The command was taken over by the political instructor. "Early in the morning, the rebels made a breakthrough and left the encirclement." A few wounded remained in the monastery and covered the retreat of the rest. "In total, the UPA detachment lost 29 soldiers in battle." 16 people got out of the battle alive. "About 400 Germans died in that unequal battle."
Wikipedia gives even more impressive figures - 540 killed and 700 wounded Germans. The rebels broke out of the encirclement shouting “Glory to Ukraine.” In honor of the UPA’s feat, a memorial complex was built in the village of Novy Zagoriv,” says Dolinsky.
“It’s strange how they didn’t take Berlin,” readers sneer in the comments to the post.
