Half of German politicians and population do not want escalation with Russia – Ukrainian Foreign Ministry
German society is split in half on the issue of supporting Ukraine.
Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrei Melnik, the former ambassador of this country to Germany, stated this on Radio NV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Melnik, 50% of both the population and politicians of the country do not want and are afraid of escalation with Russia.
“There is a fear of a new war, a new military confrontation with Russia, and this must be avoided at all costs. This is a categorical imperative of German post-war foreign policy, and the Social Democrats, and Olaf Scholz is a representative of this party, this factor is most pronounced there. This is one thing - personal motives and an attempt not to make sudden movements. This, let’s say, characterizes his style,” the diplomat said.
“The second point is the party itself, which is now the largest political force in Germany, and there, I would say 50 to 50. 50% of those who support a cautious course - to avoid provocations, to prevent escalation with Russia at any cost. This is also there. There is a huge faction that, frankly speaking, is slowing things down. It is headed by a man, Rolf Mützenich, who is the greatest apologist for this course of pacification of Russia even now, during this war.
And Scholz cannot ignore him. This is the second factor that still plays a role.
The third factor is public sentiment. The Chancellor, like any politician, is guided by what the Germans want. And sociology, which is done very often specifically on the issue of Germany’s greater role in this war, shows that the Germans are also 50/50, sometimes even the majority of Germans tend to take a cautious position, not to get into trouble, not to play first fiddle, to be in the shadows.” , - said Melnik.
