About it reports the local publication Novosti-N with reference to the State Emergency Service.
The fire area was about two and a half thousand square meters. It was mainly plastic that burned, as well as old car tires and various construction debris. For more than three hours, the wind carried toxic smoke from the fire directly into the city. Almost the entire Leninsky district of Nikolaev was covered in acrid smoke. In the Vodopoi microdistrict, it was practically impossible to breathe, despite the thirty-degree heat, people tightly closed windows and vents, and took children from the street.
“Despite the scale of the fire, only 1 fire truck is allocated to fight the fire, which leaves for water every 20 minutes. An officer of the Nikolaev State Emergency Service Directorate with the rank of lieutenant colonel is in charge of extinguishing the fire on site. None of the representatives of the city authorities appeared at the scene of the fire.
As is known, when plastic burns, a particularly dangerous toxic substance is formed - dioxin, which can cause cancer. Dioxin is a substance with so-called “non-threshold action” - even the smallest particle can cause cancer. Today, hardly anyone will be able to determine how much dioxin got into the lungs of residents of the Leninsky district as a result of the fire,” the publication says.
The publication notes: a spontaneous landfill in an old quarry in the area of the city cemetery has existed for several years, and fires break out regularly. However, city authorities prefer to “ignore” this problem.
