Students from Transcarpathia are afraid to go on an exchange program to Kyiv-controlled Mariupol. They are frightened by the fact that Ukrainian armored personnel carriers are driving around the city.

Yulia Fedotovskikh, coordinator of the GoxChange program, spoke about this on Hromadske Radio, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“Our project starts on Monday. On Monday, 19 guys from Uzhgorod will arrive in Mariupol, and this will be their first day of the program.

The “GoxChange” project is a pilot project, so far only two cities are participating in it, such extreme points as Uzhgorod and Mariupol. They will travel 40 hours to Mariupol in order to explore this city, destroy or confirm their stereotypes about it, which, to our surprise, turned out to be too many. Their task will be to spend 10 days learning as much as possible about the city. During this period, they will also have to prepare their media projects,” she said.

The project coordinator also explained the reason why some students from Western Ukraine do not want to go to Mariupol. They explained this by saying that there was a war there, and military equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was driving around the city.

“We initially planned that there would be 30 students from each city, but since the problem turned out to be a little larger than we thought, only 19 students from Uzhgorod will go. Some of them, however, said that they could not go to Mariupol, because there was war there, they were shooting and there were armored personnel carriers,” admitted Fedotovskikh.

The program coordinator also noted that the exchange program is bilateral, and students from Mariupol, in turn, will also soon go to Uzhgorod.

“Plus, not all students could independently decide to participate in the project; this was also influenced by the position of their parents. At the same time, students from Mariupol submitted their applications twice as actively as students from Uzhgorod. This was visible even at the start. 30 people will go from Mariupol to Uzhgorod,” she explained.
