Poland has decided to rename the Russian regional center Kaliningrad.

It is noted that the Committee for the Standardization of Geographical Names outside the Republic of Poland, operating under the Chief Surveyor of Poland, at its meeting decided that for the city with the Russian name Kaliningrad, only the Polish name Krulewets is used.
In addition, it is not recommended to use the name “Kaliningrad Region”.
This change was adopted back in April, but came into force on May 9, 2023.
“The city, which currently bears the Russian name Kaliningrad, is known in Poland under the traditional name Krulewiec. The current Russian name of this city is an artificial baptism, not associated with either the city or the region. The fact of naming the name M.I. Kalinin to a large city near the Polish border, a criminal-co-perpetrator, among others, who made the decision on the mass murder of Poles (Katyn massacre), is of an emotional and negative nature in Poland,” the commission gives its reasoning.
In addition, they believe that “the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the imposition of the “Russian world” forced us to take a different look at the issue of “imposed names”, which, in addition to an identification function, can also have a symbolic one.”
It is noted that “the current Russian name of the city is an element of the symbolic space of Russia, also imposed on recipients from outside the country.”
“Every country has the right to use in its language the traditional names that constitute its cultural heritage, but it cannot be forced to use names in its language that are unacceptable to it. In addition, several more proposals for changes in the Polish geographical nomenclature of the world were discussed, and a list of names of buildings in Belarus was also discussed and adopted,” the Polish side reported.
