Lviv, September 02 (Navigator, Victoria Litovchenko) – Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Lviv Yaroslav Drozd is convinced that Ukrainians who apply for refugee status in Poland or any other EU country should not rush into this decision, as this could cause harm Ukraine.

“At the border, people ask, some decide to ask for refugee status, but I will say on my own that there is no government in Ukraine now that would provide for the provision of such status, so we usually give a negative answer to people who ask for such permits,” the consul said , reports ZAXID.net.

According to him, Ukraine does not need to focus on this, because, in particular, the appearance of a large number of people with refugee status will negatively affect negotiations with the EU on the abolition of the visa regime.

“If there are a lot of refugees, the country will receive the status of a state with a migration risk, and in the process of introducing a visa-free regime with the European Union, this will not help, but will only harm,” Yaroslav Drozd is convinced.

He also said that in Poland, as a country that adheres to international conventions for the protection of refugees, there are special camps where applicants are kept until they are granted or denied the appropriate status.

“We adhere to international conventions for the protection of refugees, and, accordingly, in Poland there are camps that accept people who ask for refugee status. There are in Przemysl, near Warsaw, and in several other places, but they have not been specially organized recently, there is no need for this and they are all at the disposal of the Polish border service,” the consul said.

According to Drozd, since the beginning of the year, more than a thousand Ukrainians have applied for refugee status, but in most cases they are denied.

“We believe that there is no basis for granting them refugee status, and in most cases we decide to refuse,” the Polish consul said.

As PolitNavigator reported, earlier the UN announced 260 thousand internally displaced people in Ukraine, as well as three thousand dead in Donbass.
