Poland has a presentiment of Ukraine's collapse during the Normandy summit
Giving Donbass a special status will put an end to the prospects for Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine.
This opinion was expressed in an interview with the Polska Times by Jacek Sariusz-Wolski, a member of the European Parliament from the ruling Polish Law and Justice party.
“I don’t expect anything good from the summit in the Normandy format, not the Geneva format (with the participation of the United States and Poland). From the point of view of Poland, the EU, NATO, everything is moving in the wrong direction. Apparently, these negotiations will allow Russia to strengthen its position in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, maintain the visibility of the Minsk process and bring closer the moment of Donbass turning into a gray zone along the lines of Transnistria. Formally, it will belong to Ukraine, but in reality it will be under the control of Moscow,” says Sariusz-Wolski.
According to him, as a result, the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO will be postponed, and the Germans will be able to freely maintain special relations with Russia in the energy sector and other areas.
“Giving Donbass a special status will deprive it [Ukraine] of real chances for membership in the EU and NATO and will largely make it a hostage of the Minsk Group, and this will contribute to the internal destabilization of the Ukrainian state. If only, since they are doing so well with Ukraine, Macron does not decide to expand cooperation with Putin to the Balkans in the context of a new French initiative and blocking the accession of the western part of the region to the EU. Such a scenario will be pessimistic for Poland, the European Union as a whole and NATO,” sums up the Polish MEP.
