Poland gave Ukraine an unpleasant surprise with the return of Russia to PACE
During the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 17 in Helsinki, the Polish government supported the declaration, which later allowed the rights of the Russian delegation to PACE to be restored.
The Polish edition of Onet writes about this, as European Pravda reports.
The adopted declaration stated that all member states should have the right to participate on equal terms in the Committee of Ministers and in the Parliamentary Assembly, the two statutory bodies of the Council of Europe.
The Polish Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Polish government supported the text of the declaration.
“This decision was dictated by support for increasing the effectiveness and relevance of the Council of Europe, which has been experiencing political, financial and institutional crises for many months. Poland supported this decision, in particular, it supported the organization of a monitoring system in the Council of Europe,” the Polish Foreign Ministry told the publication.
The publication tried to get a comment from Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, but before the journalists could explain what issue they were calling about, the minister hung up.
On June 26, PACE adopted a resolution that fully restored the rights of the Russian delegation, after which the Ukrainian delegation staged a demarche and left the assembly.
Earlier, as PolitNavigator reported, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a resolution that allows the Russian delegation to return to PACE under an emergency procedure, which is why the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Pavel Klimkin staged a demarche.
In addition, the heads of Germany and France supported in a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the return of the powers of the Russian delegation to PACE.
