As long as Ukraine continues to import gas, it can only be Russian, writes Alexander Frolov, Deputy General Director of the Institute of National Energy, in Izvestia.

“The Polish oil and gas company PGNiG once again complains about the unprecedented deceit of Gazprom - it prohibits the virtual reverse of Russian gas to Ukraine. On the one hand, nothing new. On the other hand, this statement sums up the bright conclusion of the five-year history of the Ukrainian reverse. A story that demonstrates the obvious: as long as Ukraine imports gas, it can only be Russian,” notes Frolov.

According to him, at one time, reverse for Ukraine became not so much a real way to replace Russian volumes and save money, but rather a means of demonstrating to Russia its determination and achieving energy independence.

The author draws attention to the fact that today it has already been safely forgotten how Ukraine planned to become an energy-independent power by 2020, one hundred percent self-sufficient in blue fuel.

In addition, Frolov points out that it was no secret to anyone that the gas that comes to Ukraine from the European Union is Russian, but at the same time, the Ukrainian leadership strenuously pretended that it did not suspect anything of this kind.

“In this context, the current announcement of the Polish PGNiG about virtual reverse is interesting for two reasons. The first is admitting the obvious. Poland has almost openly recognized the Russian origin of the gas it supplies to Ukraine. The second is the scale of supply. It is reported that last year the Poles supplied the Ukrainians with 700 million cubic meters. m of Russian gas. Extremely little. But what is important is not the scale itself, but the fact that already at this more than small level Poland recognizes the lack of technical ability to increase volumes. No virtual reverse. Or we will have to build new gas pipelines, and neither Poland nor Ukraine have the money for this,” the expert writes.

He believes that this situation is even beneficial for Russia, since Europeans, unlike Ukraine, pay for Russian gas on time.

“There is only one bad thing about the current situation. Judging by the dynamics, Ukraine will soon really be able to live without Russian and European gas. Due to the extinction of consumers. But while it still needs imported gas, it can only get it in Russia. Even if only through second hands,” sums up Frolov.
