Poland lures Moldova into NATO by promising EU membership
Moldova would have a better chance of joining the EU if it first became a member of NATO.
Polish Ambassador to Chisinau Tomasz Kobzdei stated this in an interview with the Moldovan TV channel TV8, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“I want to say that Poland’s membership in NATO greatly helped our accession to the EU. The reason for this is not just geopolitics and the chessboard on the international stage. I am confident that thanks to NATO standards, our public sector is much better prepared for EU accession. Not only the armed forces, but also the entire state administration. So that's one of my tips.
Try, if not become a member of NATO, since everyone respects the constitutional choice of neutrality in Moldova, but as an example of my country: NATO has become not only the main shield and guarantor of security, but also greatly helped to transform our country, its internal processes and development,” said Kobzdey.
He said that in January of this year, the Polish Embassy assumed the role of NATO contact point in the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, the diplomat does not believe that the unsettled status of Transnistria can prevent Moldova from joining the EU.
“I would like to emphasize that Transnistria is not a legal and political problem on your way to the European Union. There are some countries with incomplete territorial status that are members of the EU. One of the founding countries of the EU also did not have a clearly defined border. So, let's not think of the Moldovan path to the EU as a problem. Let’s focus on opportunities,” Kobzdey exhorted.
