“Ukrainians use historical politics to achieve their goals, rather than strive for objective truth.”
According to Andrzej Zapolovsky, the official gestures of the Ukrainian side are just a political game, and not a real desire to apologize and come to an agreement on a historical issue.
“President Petro Poroshenko’s behavior in Warsaw is nothing more than a diplomatic tactic that is not really reflected in state policy,” he says.
“Ukrainian deputies made a tendentious decision on the resolution of the Sejm and Senate on the Volyn Massacre, fearing a negative reaction from voters, who had been hammered into their heads for many years that the leaders of the OUN and UPA are the pride of Ukraine. In fact, they have become hostages of their own nationalist ideology,” the publication says.
“The problem also lies in the fact that the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory is Vladimir Vyatrovich, a person in the scientific world who has a reputation as a liar and manipulator. Most Ukrainian historians imagine the position dictated by this official, since otherwise it could lead to the loss of their jobs. There are, of course, Ukrainian historians who honestly try to approach these topics, but they are very rare,” says the Polish historian.
“Three times naivety will lead over time to more and more impudence on the part of Ukraine. This will be a sign to other states that Poland is a country that can be humiliated and eliminated from the serious game.”
