“It (gas cooperation between Ukraine and Poland - ed.) exists and it will exist, both Ukraine and Poland need it. We have an interconnector - that's one thing. You know, when Russia cut off gas to Ukraine after the Stockholm Arbitration, Ukraine received gas from Poland. In general, as soon as information about the gas shutdown appeared, Poland offered Ukraine access to our gas. Therefore, the first thing is the interconnector, the second is the supply of liquefied gas, this is a Polish project, and we would like to receive gas from other countries - not from Russia. From the United States, if possible,” the ambassador said.

In his opinion, maintaining gas transit through Ukraine is “Poland’s interest.”

“I think it is the interest of Poland, the interest of the Baltic countries, the interest of Ukraine - to diversify gas to our countries in different directions, and so that Russia does not become a monopolist. Russia, after what it did through the Stockholm Arbitration, is a bad partner, and there are partners from other sides - from the USA, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Norway. We just need to think through the directions for achieving energy independence,” he noted.

Peklo also supported the position of German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline does not mean the cessation of supplies through Ukraine.

“Nord Stream 2” is the position of Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic countries, the USA - it is a political project. It’s interesting what Angela Merkel said about the need for transit through Ukraine. What's interesting is Germany's new position. She (Merkel – ed.) did not specify how it would be, how much gas would pass through Ukraine, through Nord Stream 2, but this is a change in Berlin’s position, a new idea,” the ambassador added.

Earlier, Naftogaz stated that the words Merkel said during Petro Porroshenko’s visit to Berlin do not provide guarantees for Ukrainian gas transit.
