“There are dark spots in the history of any nation. But during the Volyn massacre there were many Ukrainian families who hid Poles and Jews at risk to their lives. Why not tell about them? Why can’t the national mythology be based on individuals who opposed chauvinism and genocide?” the author is perplexed.
“The Germans also brought a lot of grief to the Poles in their time. But the Poles do not hold a grudge against them. Back in the seventies, Germany apologized to Poland for the atrocities of the Germans. On the eve of the anniversary of the Volyn massacre, Ukrainians named one of the central streets of the capital in honor of Bandera,” the journalist continues.
“A necessary condition for Turkey’s entry into the European Union is the recognition of the Armenian genocide. It’s unthinkable to even imagine a country in Europe that is governed by people who glorify nationalists who commit genocide,” Maruschak clarifies.
