Poltorak admitted that Ukrainian officers are fleeing the army en masse
Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak appealed to Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman with a request to increase the pay of military personnel in order to stop the outflow of officers from the army.
The Kiev online newspaper reports this, citing the portal ukrmilitary.com "Country".
“From January to June, 11 thousand contract soldiers and officers with military experience quit, and another 18 thousand should quit by the end of this year,” the minister’s letter says.
He points out that at the beginning of 2016, the minimum salary for military personnel was 7 thousand hryvnia, which was equal to approximately five times the minimum wage and almost 1,6 times the average salary in the country, but the increase in social standards from January 1, 2017 worsened the financial situation of the military and provoked their outflow.
So, today, the monetary support of Ukrainian military personnel in the first year of service is 7,5 thousand hryvnia, while the average salary in the country is 8,7 thousand.
The Minister of Defense asks from October 1 to increase the minimum allowance for military personnel: for ordinary personnel - up to 9 thousand, for officers - up to 15,3 thousand hryvnia.
