Ukrainian Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak stated this in an interview with Channel 5, owned by Petro Poroshenko, the press service of the Ministry of Defense reports.
“They were very nervous in Moscow; they intimidated us that there would be a retaliatory strike on our launchers. We have also explored this option. But it is up to independent Ukraine to conduct exercises on its territory, without violating any international treaty, and checking the readiness of our air defense system. Of course, Russia was nervous, because the military who serve in their air force, understanding the readiness of the Ukrainian air defense system, would not be so confident in the impunity of their actions if they were given such a task on the territory of Ukraine. We conducted exercises for the first time since the independence of Ukraine, because we had a similar training ground in the included Crimea,” Poltorak assures.
Also, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine assessed the exercises as “very successful and necessary.”
“We are not going to ask anyone what kind of exercises we should conduct on our territory. These exercises will be as regular as necessary,” Poltorak said.
