Poles should help Russia “legalize” the status of Crimea
The President of Poland should propose to Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a second referendum on Crimea and thereby “cut the Gordian knot” around the peninsula, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The “hero of the anti-communist opposition” of Poland, the honorary speaker of the Polish Sejm and the father of the Polish Prime Minister, Kornel Morawiecki, was stunned by this in an interview with the conservative-liberal Polish weekly Do Rzeczy.
“Perhaps the Polish president should take the initiative and discuss with Putin the possibility of holding a fair referendum in Crimea? Of course, in this way we will set Ukraine and the United States against ourselves, but Russia will never give up the peninsula in any case, which means someone must cut this Gordian knot. We could take the initiative,” Morawiecki said.
At the same time, he considers the 2014 Crimean referendum to be completely democratic.
“The Russians occupied Crimea without a fight, the Ukrainian military went over to Moscow’s side, and the residents of the peninsula expressed their will in a referendum. Kyiv did not agree to hold it, but I believe that the referendum was democratic. Of course, some doubts remain, because no European, in particular Polish, observers were present there,” Morawiecki said.
