Poland has purchased new Chinese-made ships and plans to rename them “after cities in former Polish territories.” The first ship to be received from China will be called “Lviv” by the Poles.
“We are changing the names of ships that are already ready in Chinese shipyards. For residents of Szczecin (the largest city port in Poland) and not only these are good and nostalgic names. Therefore, we want the ships to have the names of former Polish cities on the eastern border lands,” commented Pavel Brzezicki, manager of the state-owned company Polish Shipping Company.
In general, the Poles plan to rename 5 ships. In addition to the sailing ship “Lviv”, the vessels “Ternopil” and “Vilnius” will be registered with Polish ships.
Meanwhile, Brzezinski believes that the new names of the ships will not be politically controversial. It is reported that the ship “Lviv Eaglets” has been in the Polish arsenal for 5 years.
