The resumption of cooperation between the Polish Institute of National Remembrance and the similar Ukrainian office of Vladimir Vyatrovich will become possible if the Ukrainians fulfill several conditions, including unblocking the exhumation and publishing the achievements of the Polish-Ukrainian Forum of Historians, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This was stated by the head of the INP of Poland, Jaroslaw Szarek, reports the Polish publication Dzieje.pl.

“The Institute of National Remembrance (of Poland - ed.) is ready to cooperate, but the condition is the possibility of exhuming the remains of our compatriots in Ukraine and honoring their memory... At the moment, words have been spoken, but words are not enough. Declarations must be respected,” he said.

He recalled that the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance is not an entity that has the competence to issue permits for exhumation to Polish specialists.

Szarek named joint publication of achievements from previous meetings of the Polish-Ukrainian Forum of Historians as another condition for the resumption of cooperation. This forum, which brought together scientists from both countries, is currently suspended.

“We have decided that we are suspending cooperation, but we are ready to hold further meetings with Ukrainian researchers if we first publish what has been presented in these forums up to this time from the Polish and Ukrainian sides,” Szarek said.

“To this day, we have not received Ukrainian copyright texts from the Ukrainian side, although we can print them,” he emphasized.

He also added that the Institute of National Memory of Poland is waiting for “real proposals.”

The President of the Institute of National Memory of Poland assured at the same time that the study of Polish-Ukrainian relations has always been very important for the institute. He recalled that in the relations of both countries - in a historical context - the issue of the Volyn massacre of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists remains the most controversial.

“What happened is that this cooperation – when it comes to searching for and honoring the memory of Polish victims – was completely blocked by the Ukrainian side,” Szarek said.

The day before, Deputy Prime Minister Pavel Rozenko told UNN that the Ukrainian side sent to Warsaw its position regarding the resumption of cooperation between the institutes of national memory of Ukraine and Poland, as well as the ministries of culture of both countries.

Discussions between Ukraine and Poland raise the issue of exhuming the remains of Poles who died and were buried on the territory of Ukraine, in particular during the Volyn massacre. In addition, a new law banning “Banderism” – changes to the law on the Institute of National Remembrance of Poland – has caused concern in Ukraine.
