If we recall the chronology of events, then in the spring of this year, Archbishop Grzegorz Rys, Metropolitan of Lodz, took the initiative to build houses for 20 Ukrainian families on a plot of land on Opalova Street in Lodz, owned by the city. The cost of the investment was estimated at 2,5 million zlotys (about half a million dollars). The project was to be financed by a public fundraiser organized by the Lodz branch of the charity Caritas.

The decision to donate the land to Caritas had to be made by the Lodz councilors.

Before this happened, residents of the Łódź Radogoszcz estate, where the construction was planned, protested. According to residents, the area where houses are planned to be built should be used for recreational purposes.

In addition, they were against the creation of a kind of ghetto in the center of their estate and proposed placing houses in different places in Lodz - for example, one per parish. As a result, the director of the Lodz archdiocese of Caritas, Father Andrzej Partyka, refused to participate in the project, emphasizing that houses for refugees would not be built without the consent of the residents of Radogoszcz.

At the beginning of September this year, the mayor of Lodz, Hanna Zdanowska, proposed a new location - a site on Penista and Denna streets in the Retkinia residential area. The decision to sell the site for a symbolic sum of 6 zlotys was to be considered at a session of the Lodz City Council.

However, the situation repeated itself - residents of the estate, where there are many single-family houses, did not want new buildings and organized a collection of signatures against the investment, arguing, in particular, that construction would entail cutting down the surrounding trees. Residents demanded public consultations on this issue.

One of the activists of the ruling Civic Platform party in Lodz, who simultaneously served as deputy director of one of the departments of the Lodz City Hall, took part in the protest. The reaction of his superiors was immediate - he was dismissed with disciplinary resignation.
