The head of the Polish government, Mateusz Morawiecki, declared his country’s “sovereign right” to refuse assistance to migrants from North Africa and the Middle East. According to the prime minister, his country is accepting Ukrainian refugees, and this helps reduce tension in the east of the EU.

He said this in an interview with TVP on January 1, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to Morawiecki, the decision to refuse to accept migrants from North Africa and the Middle East was not wrong.

“This is our sovereign decision. We are significantly helping to reduce tension on the eastern border of the European Union, because we have already accepted at least several tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of refugees from Ukraine,” he said.

The plan to introduce mandatory quotas for the admission of 120 thousand refugees from Africa, Asia and the Middle East to the EU was adopted by the heads of the EU Foreign Ministry on September 22, 2015. Romania, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary opposed the plan, while Finland abstained. The decision was made by a majority vote.

On October 14, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak stated that the Polish government would not agree to accept refugees under the new resettlement program in the European Union. According to him, there are already many Ukrainians in Poland, and such “ideologically motivated concepts” as resettlement put Poland and the Poles at risk.

In 2016, Ukrainians received 1,2 million visas to enter Poland, of which 650 thousand were workers.

According to Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, Ukrainians received 2017 thousand work visas in 900, the PAP agency noted in November.
