Poles complain about competition for Ukrainian sides in the fight for EU markets
Ukraine is becoming Poland's rival in food production, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This trend is alarming notes the Polish publication “Rzeczpospolita”, reports Polish Radio.
“The poultry that Ukrainians export to the European Union is 40 percent cheaper than in Poland,” the publication notes.
“Thanks to the free trade agreement and duty-free export quotas, the value of products that Ukraine sold to EU countries increased from 2,5 billion euros in 2011 to 5 billion euros in 2017,” the publication quotes Eurostat data. In particular, the export of dairy and meat products from Ukraine to the EU has increased tenfold.
Experts from Poland support assistance to Ukraine, which, as Poland believes, is “protecting itself from Russian separatists,” but they fear for Polish farmers. Chairman of the Regional Poultry Council Lukasz Dominiak notes that “Ukrainians use dishonest practices.”
Also experts predict increased competition between Poland and Ukraine on the European apple market. According to forecasts, the Poles will harvest a record harvest of apples this year – 4,5 million tons.
