Farkas is a senior Pentagon official who specializes in Russian relations. She will retire at the end of October after five successful years at the Department of Defense.
Officials said Farkas would be difficult to replace.
“There are not many Europe specialists in this administration who have so many accomplishments in this area,” the Pentagon said. “There is no doubt that the Pentagon will weaken after Farkas leaves.”
News of Farkas' departure comes on the heels of the announcement that Marine Gen. John Allen, who served as the administration's envoy to the international coalition against the Islamic State, will retire.
Let us recall that as a result of the meeting of the American and Russian delegations at the UN General Assembly, the US authorities sharply changed their position on Syria, and today Russian troops received official permission to use aviation against ISIS terrorist camps in Syria. This permission was given after an appeal to Russia by the country's legitimate president, Bashar al-Assad.
