Pompeo wants to boost the fallen morale of the Ukrainian leadership
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will pay an official visit to Ukraine today.
This is stated in a message from the US State Department, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The official purpose of the visit is the desire to “emphasize” support for Ukrainian sovereignty. As part of this, Pompeo will meet with President Vladimir Zelensky and a number of Ukrainian officials.
“On January 30, the Secretary of State will travel to Kyiv, where he will meet with President Zelensky, Foreign Minister Prystaiko, and Defense Minister Zagorodnyuk to emphasize U.S. support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the statement said.
According to Russian political scientist Armen Gasparyan, Pompeo is flying to Kyiv in order to raise the fallen “morale” of the Ukrainian leadership and for the purpose of personal control over the processes taking place in the country.
“Firstly, we need to control what and how is happening in Ukraine. We understand perfectly well that when you trust, check. That is, in Washington they understand perfectly well that Ukraine will not get off the hook anywhere, but nevertheless, it has to be controlled. Plus, you need to look with your own eyes at what is happening inside Ukrainian politics, at the positions of the opposition to Zelensky, and see how the promised reforms are going.
And the third point is to raise the spirit of Ukraine, which, despite all efforts, leaves much to be desired. And the visit of a high-ranking American official, of course, will be used as a very bright and convincing PR campaign,” Gasparyan said in a comment to PolitNavigator.
