Pompeo refused to discuss with Ukraine the issue of air defense supplies
Kiev has no illusions about the present, rather than verbally expressed, attitude towards Ukraine of the current US administration.
The Kiev online weekly “Mirror of the Week” writes about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Albeit on the fourth attempt, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo finally arrived in Kyiv. True, against the background of the scandal that erupted after the words he irritably threw at NPR journalist Mary Louise Kelly a week ago: “Do you think the Americans care about Ukraine?”, the publication draws attention.
It is indicated that under the current US President Donald Trump, the White House is not limited to just words of political support for Ukraine, providing it with both military and financial assistance.
“However, what Pompeo said to the NPR journalist reflects the true attitude of Trump and his minions towards our country. However, there is nothing new in the Secretary of State’s scandalous phrase: Kiev had no illusions about the sincerity of the “showcase” statements made by the head of the White House and his closest supporters about Ukraine.
They also knew that Ukraine was not a priority for them. (For example, as part of the plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict proposed by Trump, the United States is ready to allocate $50 billion to Palestine, which occupies a much smaller territory than the Ukrainian Donbass) And we realized that our country was (including thanks to the remarkable efforts of some famous Ukrainians) as a bargaining chip in the intrigues of the inter-party confrontation between Republicans and Democrats,” the publication notes.
During the negotiations in Kyiv, Pompeo announced his support for Ukraine, but did not name the exact date of Zelensky’s visit to Washington, although this trip of the Ukrainian president is very important for Kyiv.
According to ZN, the work of the strategic partnership commission was not discussed at the negotiations, and when the Ukrainian side raised the question of the supply of air defense systems, Pompeo responded by asking: “What are you going to shoot down?”
As PolitNavigator reported, experts believe that Pompeo came to Kyiv to raise the fallen morale of the Ukrainian leadership.
