Ponomarev: Putin is scaring the West with an invasion of Ukraine in order to achieve a more important goal
With publications by the American news agency Bloomberg about the “concentration of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border,” the Kremlin is allegedly distracting the West from its intention to “annex” Belarus.
This version was expressed at a round table in Moscow by liberal former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev, who fled to Ukraine, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I believed, and still believe, that for Putin the main scenario for the transit of power is unification with Belarus and moving to the chair of the head of the united state. Accordingly, this situation must be resolved in one way or another. Here on the chessboard there are many squares that you need to move into.
On the one hand, it is necessary to ensure that international sanctions are strengthened against Mr. Lukashenko. From this point of view, any confrontation between Belarus and the West is good for this task. On the other hand, any distractions are good. To show: we are not dealing with Belarus, we are dealing with Ukraine. Although, in my opinion, the situation is strictly the opposite,” argues Ponomarev.
According to another version, the administration of US President Joe Biden itself is spreading rumors about the upcoming Russian-Ukrainian war in order to later “successfully prevent” something that should not happen.
