As follows from court materials, the incident occurred on the evening of January 3, 2017 in the Bakhmut district of the Donetsk region.
A soldier of the air assault battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces discovered an enemy drone in the concentration area. With the permission of the commander, the soldier fired 2-3 targeted single shots from an AKS-74 assault rifle in the direction of the aircraft.
After that, the soldier hung the machine gun behind his back, barrel down. However, contrary to the instructions, he did not disconnect the magazine, did not distort the bolt frame, did not carry out a control release and did not put the weapon on safety, leaving it in the firing position.
The soldier walked like this for about an hour until, being next to another soldier, he began to remove the machine gun from his shoulder and at the same time accidentally pulled the trigger.
As a result, the soldier inflicted a gunshot wound to his colleague in the left groin area with damage to the common femoral artery and vein, a gunshot fracture of the lesser trochanter of the left femur and a marginal fracture of the head of the femur, which falls into the category of grievous bodily harm.
The court sentenced him to 1 year in prison and a probationary period of 1 year. The court also ordered compensation to the state for the costs of treating the victim in the amount of UAH 49.
