Kyiv, March 17 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) – Petro Poroshenko announced the intensification of joint efforts with Romania to “unfreeze” the conflict around the unrecognized Transnistrian Republic. The Ukrainian president agreed on this today at a meeting in Kyiv with his Romanian counterpart Werner Iohannis.

“We agreed to coordinate our actions on Transnistria in order to help defrost this conflict and help sovereign and independent Moldova restore its territorial integrity and reintegrate the Transnistrian region into Moldova,” said Petro Poroshenko.

As the press service of the Ukrainian president clarifies, “special attention” was paid to the issue of Transnistria during the meeting in Kyiv.

Let us recall that at the end of February there were reports in the press that Ukraine, at the request of Moldova, will tighten the checkpoint regime on the border with Transnistria, will strangle its economy and begin a blockade of the Operational Group of Russian troops in this republic. The OGRF has still had problems with land supplies from Russia, and now the sky will be closed to them.

At the same time, the acting speaker of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vladislav Seleznev, stated that Transnistria is a platform for training Russian mercenaries.

“In the territory of Transnistria and Crimea, mercenaries are being trained. These sites are used by the Russian side to train terrorists and reservists for conducting a hybrid war,” Seleznev said.

As PolitNavigator reported, in August, Ukrainian military expert Dmitry Tymchuk, now elected to the Verkhovna Rada from Arseniy Yatsenyuk’s party, said that Ukraine should provide assistance to Moldova in restoring control over Transnistria, and not only politically.

“I think it’s time to admit: Transnistria, as the territory from which Russia is carrying out operations against Ukraine (it’s worth remembering how in March crowds of saboteurs came towards us from here until they blocked the border) is an entity hostile to Ukraine. This is the Kremlin’s springboard for actions against our state.

And Ukraine must, in the future, make every effort to restore Moldova’s control over this territory. Without this, the PMR, like a Russian landmine next to Ukraine, will wait in the wings until it explodes,” Tymchuk wrote on Facebook.

In November, Petro Poroshenko during a visit to the Republic of Moldova stated that he considers Transnistria part of the Republic of Moldova.
