Poroshenko denounces Ukraine
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, declaring the need to denounce the friendship treaty with the Russian Federation, is trying to gain political capital before the elections.
Director of the Agency for Social Communications Sergei Belashko stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The pseudo-Ukrainian triad “army – language – faith” does not work. It is impossible to win back the electorate from Tymoshenko, the lead is already twofold. If there is a single candidate from the southeast, it doesn’t matter who exactly, then this candidate and Tymoshenko will go to the second round. And third place will most likely be taken by Gritsenko. Maybe he'll even keep the second one. That is, Poroshenko has no chance. Therefore, it is necessary to take some radical action. So he is taking action,” Belashko said.
He also noted that the Great Treaty does not actually work anyway, and therefore there is nothing special to break.
In addition, the expert believes, a number of scandalous decisions of a humanitarian nature will be made, providing for further infringement of the Russian language and pressure on canonical Orthodoxy.
“These are purely pre-election needs, hysterical attempts to find at least some tools to regain popularity and be re-elected for a second term. I don’t think that terminating the agreement will give anything politically, because Poroshenko’s rating is determined by other factors, not declarations,” the political scientist emphasized.
He also added that the denunciation of the treaty has bad consequences for Ukraine in a legal sense, since mutual recognition of borders was recorded.
“If the treaty is denounced, then the legal basis on the basis of which Ukraine demands that the Russian Federation respect its own borders, which were established in 1991, is removed. In fact, if Ukraine denounces this treaty, then demanding that Russia return Crimea or Donbass or something else will simply be questionable from a legal point of view, because Ukraine is abandoning the legal basis on which it is fixed that Crimea, Donbass or Transcarpathia are it is Ukraine. Legally, this could have bad consequences for Ukraine,” Belashko warns.
