Moscow - Kyiv, February 25 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Stamm) - President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko yesterday, following an inspection of the IDEX-2015 arms and military equipment exhibition in Abu Dhabi, announced the signing of more than 20 weapons contracts. Moreover, as it became known “To Kommersant”, the Ukrainian military is considering the possibility of creating its own anti-aircraft missile system: they want to make all the components themselves, and are ready to order the missile externally.

The Ukrainian delegation began the morning with a meeting with a group of American military personnel led by US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Frank Kendall, the newspaper describes. The day before, he told the American media that the parties intend to discuss issues of supplies for the Ukrainian army: “Right now we are limited in what we can give them, but we want to support them as much as we can.”

Poroshenko ignored the Ukroboronexport stand, where dozens of television cameras were waiting, and went straight to the stand of the Turkish missile manufacturer Roketsan. According to the publication, the Ukrainian delegation was interested in the possibility of jointly developing an anti-aircraft missile system. Ukraine is ready to develop the launcher, chassis and control system itself, and plans to order the missile (presumably 300 mm caliber) from a third-party manufacturer, considering the Turkish company as a priority.

At the stand of the Turkish company Otokar, Poroshenko sat behind the wheel of a Cobra II armored vehicle, and at the Emirates Defense Industries Company exposition, he got acquainted with the AU-220M 57 mm artillery mount, developed at the Russian Central Research Institute “Burevestnik”, mounted on a chassis manufactured in the UAE. The President of Ukraine also inspected a model of the South Korean Hyundai Rotem tank and listened to detailed explanations about the 120-mm artillery mount developed by the International Golden Group (UAE).

Then Poroshenko went to negotiations with the leadership of the UAE, after which he stated that “Ukraine has concluded about 20 contracts for the supply of weapons: agreements have been signed on the supply of defensive weapons to Ukraine by European, American and Middle Eastern companies.”

Poroshenko recalled that the UAE was the first to supply armored vehicles Cougar, Spartan and other armored vehicles to Ukraine, which were effectively used by the national armed forces in the combat zone. Now we have significantly expanded the range of supplies.”

According to one of Kommersant’s interlocutors, we are talking, in particular, about the supply of several types of armored vehicles, mortar and anti-tank systems, as well as “other defensive weapons” to the Ukrainian army.
