A resident of the Vinnytsia region in September 2014, upon mobilization, was drafted into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and, after completing training, was appointed to the position of gunner of an airborne landing company of the military unit field post B3720. Next, the soldier was sent to the Donetsk region, where he fought in the area of the village of Peski and Donetsk airport.

In February 2015, having received 10 days leave, the “cyborg” went home.

On February 12, 2015, he sought medical help in Vinnitsa, after which he was hospitalized until March 12, 2015, but after discharge he did not return back to his unit, but stayed at home with his family and cared for his sick mother.

He didn’t tell the command anything; later, at the trial, the “cyborg” announced that he had lost his phone number.

The ATO veteran returned to his unit only two years later - on March 27, 2017, where he was prosecuted for desertion and sentenced, taking into account his pregnant wife and sick mother, to 3 years in prison with a probationary period of 2 years.

And hereafter a rather trivial conviction by the Konstantinovsky court Donetsk region is puzzling.

The court decided that the convict will serve this sentence not at home, visiting the local police officer once a month for check-in, but at his place of service in his military unit, on the front line, and is also obliged to “periodically appear for registration with the commander of the military unit and inform him about the change places of service."

If previously a “conditional” conviction saved from further participation in the war, now the state of Ukraine is ready to forgive any criminal offenses in order to preserve personnel on the front line.

With this development of events, the appearance of modern penal battalions will no longer be surprising.
