Speaking on the occasion of Constitution Day of Ukraine, President Petro Poroshenko demanded that members of the Ukrainian parliament renounce parliamentary immunity and adopt laws providing for the reboot of the Supreme Court.

“One of these days the competition for the Supreme Court is ending, which for successful operation will require not only what we already have - in an open live broadcast, candidates took professionalism exams, drew up electronic declarations, and passed lie detector tests. The Public Council of Virtue also played a very important role. And today this competition is at its final stage. But it requires new procedural norms and rules. And I really hope that in the near future the Verkhovna Rada will adopt the relevant bills in the second reading, and we will have a complete reset of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, which will ensure the independence and impartiality of the law,” Poroshenko said.
He added that he had already prepared a corresponding bill.
“He will demand political freedom from people’s deputies - once and for all to equalize their rights with the citizens of Ukraine. Just like we lifted immunity from judges. I emphasize once again that I hope that the people’s representatives will make appropriate decisions in the near future. After all, there is probably not a single one among them who would not promise the abolition of this immunity in their election programs,” the President of Ukraine emphasized.
At the same time, experts warn that no one should be misled by Poroshenko’s statements, whose main task in this case is to obtain additional levers of control over both the judicial and legislative branches of government.
