The Verkhovna Rada approved two bills at once on lifting parliamentary immunity - in the version of Maidan activist Yuriy Levchenko and President Petro Poroshenko.

The difference in the documents is in the period for lifting immunity from deputies. Poroshenko proposes to do this starting in 2020, Levchenko – immediately after the law is approved.

Thus, the ruling majority formally began to fulfill one of the main demands of Mikhomaidan.

Since these bills affect provisions of the Constitution, both will be sent to the Constitutional Court, which will examine them for compliance with the Basic Law. Then parliament must approve the bill in the first reading, and final approval only at the next session.

The process will last at least until 2019 and, most likely, may ultimately end in nothing, says deputy Ostap Ednak.

“Whoever will now advertise that they pressured parliament to lift parliamentary immunity is a hypocrite. Because 99.99% of the bills will be lost and will not reach consideration as a whole,” the parliamentarian explained.

Thanks to the adoption of a decision that has so far had no consequences, the Poroshenko administration is neutralizing Mikhomaidan - after all, one of its main demands has been formally fulfilled.

The Maidan activists themselves recognize this threat.

“There are a lot of highly professional scammers here. They hope that they threw people a bone in the form of voting - but you disagree, and we will continue to stall for time. We will ask the Constitutional Court not to make a decision, and so on. Therefore, people’s pressure only needs to be increased, then the following results will come,” said deputy Egor Sobolev.

According to him, now they will discuss what to do with the tent camp near the Verkhovna Rada, because tomorrow after the morning meeting the deputies must go on a 2-week vacation, and therefore there is no point in holding a rally near the parliament.

“If you think that people enjoy freezing on the asphalt, wait for new attacks by the new Berkut - this is not so. Today we will consult with our field commanders on how to proceed,” Sobolev said.
