Poroshenko and Obama signal to Putin: Mariupol cannot be taken
Kyiv, September 19 (PolitNavigator, Kirill Boyarin) – Petro Poroshenko’s words about the need for American military assistance are explained by the fact that the Ukrainian side still fears a renewed offensive by the pro-Russian militia in the Donbass.
Ukrainian political scientist Vladimir Fesenko told PolitNavigator about this.

“Poroshenko said that we will defend ourselves, no matter what, but we will also use a peace plan. This reflects the position of Obama, who has shown that he is also quite satisfied with the peaceful option. But, if suddenly the peace process breaks down, then the Americans will quickly help Ukraine with weapons. But I think that the continuation of the ATO is possible if the separatists and Russian troops launch a counter-offensive, but these should not be local skirmishes and attempts to take the airport in Donetsk, but an attempt to capture Mariupol and the resumption of large-scale offensives,” the expert said.
“I think that the visit can be assessed positively and considered quite successful. In politics, results are not achieved immediately, the very fact of a visit and a speech in Congress is already a great achievement, the results of agreements on expanding economic, political and military assistance to Ukraine, albeit at the level of non-lethal weapons, are a demonstration of support for Ukraine from the United States, and this a signal not only to Ukraine, but also to Russia.
Another thing is that we would like more. The request that we need help with weapons is, rather, an influence on American public opinion, in order to convince Americans that we need more serious support, because congressional elections are coming soon, and there is a possibility that the number of supporters of supporting Ukraine in Congress will increase. This is a request for the future,” says Fesenko.
