Poroshenko wants to give part of the Kherson region to Crimean Tatar autonomy

“The talk was about annexing the adjacent territory, where quite a lot of Tatars live, and in total about 12 thousand Crimean Tatars live in the Kherson region. It was about the Tatars who, during the Soviet era, tried to enter Crimea, but they were thrown out, and they settled close to Crimea to make it easier to return. The talk was about annexing the Genichesk region to the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. And then, instead of the occupied Crimea, create a free administration there, in Genichesk.
Both the Prime Minister and the President liked this idea, but, unfortunately, it contradicts the Constitution. There, the article on the autonomous republic states that this autonomous republic is located within the Crimean region, and the expansion of its territory can only be decided by a majority in parliament, and now this is impossible.
Maybe we will return to this issue after the elections. Again, this all has to do with how much we can protect this part of Ukraine from the Russians,” Dzhemilev said.
