Poroshenko wants to negotiate a second term from the United States
Poroshenko is doing his best to slow down the creation of an anti-corruption court, which will be directly subordinate to the West. He and his team can become defendants in this justice machine. This could also negatively affect his reputation before the upcoming elections in Ukraine.
Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik spoke about this on the Newsone TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There is a simple and a complex answer. The simple answer is that the president and his entourage are afraid that they will personally become clients of the anti-corruption court and will act as defendants in anti-corruption trials.
Yes – it’s complicated. I am sure that the topic around the anti-corruption court is where the Ukrainian authorities are bargaining with their Western partners regarding support in the 2019 elections – both parliamentary and presidential.
By demonstrating a willingness to concede, they want to exchange this concession in the form of direct foreign control of political elites for their support in 2019.
Today, the topic of anti-corruption court is already absolutely safe for the Ukrainian authorities. Since even if the bill that the IMF demands is adopted, then, in the best case, the anti-corruption court will start working in 2019 (a year after adoption), and its first decisions are impossible before 2020. That is, his decisions do not affect the government and the election campaign,” said Ruslan Bortnik.
