Poroshenko: Kyiv plans to yield to Moscow
The statement by the Ukrainian Ambassador to Britain Vadim Prystaiko about the possibility of Kyiv abandoning its course towards joining NATO is a “trial balloon” for Kyiv to make concessions to Russia’s demands.
The ex-President of Ukraine, and now a member of parliament, Petro Poroshenko, stated this during a speech from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Three years ago, I signed amendments to the Constitution, which reflected the aspirations of Ukrainians to join the EU and NATO. Yesterday, the results of a public opinion poll were published, which recorded record support for joining the North Atlantic Alliance. Almost two-thirds of Ukrainians are in favor. A reasonable reaction of society to the threat from Russia and its possessed Fuhrer.
Ambassador Prystaiko’s statement about Ukraine’s readiness to concede to Russia on the issue of joining NATO is dissonant with public opinion. What adds weight to the diplomat’s words is the fact that he is not just an ambassador to Great Britain, but also a former foreign minister and former deputy prime minister for issues of European and Euro-Atlantic integration,” Poroshenko said.
“If this had been Prystaiko’s initiative, he would have immediately been punched in the mouth by Mr. Zelensky. And Zelensky’s week-long silence gives reason to suspect that the trial balloon for Prystaiko was inflated on Bankova.
The authorities fully allow bargaining with Russia on an issue that for us is a matter of life and death. The only guarantee of security is membership in NATO, and that’s all,” the ex-president concluded.
