Poroshenko rejoices: the United States imposes sanctions against Nord Stream 2
Petro Poroshenko burst out with gratitude to the United States for adopting a new package of sanctions against companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“Grateful to our American friends for a clear signal to the Russian aggressor! The US Senate has approved a defense budget with targeted sanctions against Nord Stream 2. A powerful signal of support and energy solidarity for us all.
It is also very symbolic that the corresponding sanctions were agreed upon in the defense package, because for Moscow this project was never an economic one. Natural gas has long turned into Russia’s energy weapon,” Poroshenko said in a statement.
“The US Senate, by a vote of 86 to 8, imposed sanctions against Nord Stream 2. Now Donald Trump must sign the law. The Trump administration will have 60 days to identify companies and individuals providing services in the development process. The sanctions cancel American visas and block the property of these individuals. Those sanctioned will have 30 days to wind down their activities.
One of the large contractors that could come under attack is the Swiss company Allseas, which was hired by the Russian Gazprom to build the offshore section,” explains Taras Berezovets, a political scientist serving Poroshenko.
