These conclusions were shared by Ukrainian expert, director of the Institute for Strategic Studies “Nova Ukraine” Andrey Ermolaev.
“The strengthening of the position of the president, reshuffles in the security forces and the change of the entire ruling presidium of the former Maidan indicate that power is being consolidated in the hands of one ruling group, the leader of which is the head of state. A number of figures who back in 2014 were part of the new government, new heroes, have generally gone into the shadows. By the second half of 2016, we have a pronounced autocratic regime, which is consolidated around the president with a set of figures who have nothing to do with the history of those radical political changes, the change of power in 2014,” he says.
In his opinion, further retention of power in the conditions of a narrow social base is possible only by force.
“This was expressed in the failure of the coalition, a change in the opposition, a split in the presidential party, where at least two projects emerged that take a much more critical position than even the public political opposition. This was expressed in the discrediting of the symbolic figures of the Maidan and even attempts to remove them from the political Olympus. All this suggests that the regime intends to deal with risks by force,” says Andrei Ermolaev.
