Poroshenko may take away Ukrainian passports from every fifth person
Every fifth citizen of Ukraine risks being deprived of a Ukrainian passport, since he also has a second citizenship.
This was stated by participants in a conference in Kyiv dedicated to the prospect of the entry into force of the bill on dual citizenship introduced by Petro Poroshenko.
“According to the Institute for Strategic Studies, more than 20 percent of Ukrainians today have dual citizenship – two or more passports. At the same time, before the occupation of Crimea began, 350 thousand Ukrainians - residents of Crimea and Donbass - already had Russian passports by that time, 100 thousand Hungarian, 80 Romanian, plus now about 40 thousand have been distributed, 40 are in the queue of illegal LDPR passports,” she announced the data Director of the Center for Baltic-Black Sea Studies Irina Vereshchuk, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“In case of strengthening the role of the state and the institution of citizenship, and attempts to force others to refuse (from second citizenship - ed.), I have a question: deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship is the prerogative of the president. If 20 percent of Ukrainians have a second passport, let’s say that’s a fifth of the population, taking into account migration, let’s say five million. Now imagine if out of these five million at least two said: “Great, Ukrainian citizenship, goodbye!”, and here the president decides. I’m very interested to see how the president will sign five million statements, or at least two, purely technically,” Igor Tyshkevich, an analyst at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, commented on the prospects.
