Poroshenko begins a new split in Ukraine
The creation of a new structure announced by Petro Poroshenko - the “United Local Church” - on the basis of the former UOC-KP and UAOC, which came under the Patriarchate of Constantinople, will result in a new round of schism in Ukraine, now along religious lines.
This forecast was voiced to PolitNavigator by Donetsk political scientist Vladimir Kornilov.
“This is from the series “Our song is good, start over.” Remember how many years Viktor Yushchenko fought for the same thing? He even organized a magnificent reception for the Patriarch of Constantinople with such pomp that no US president had ever been greeted. And we all remember that the matter never moved forward due to the condemnation of this initiative, both among the Orthodox and among the world hierarchs of the Orthodox Church.
This idea is fraught with a new split. And I remember that Poroshenko understood this before. As for the parishes in Donbass and Crimea, you know, not only there, but also in Ukraine, many parishes will decide not to submit to such a project. And this will be a point of no return for these parishes for any Church that will bear the name “Ukrainian,” argues Kornilov.
