Poroshenko screwed up the attack on RIA Novosti
Searches of journalists and the detention of the editor-in-chief of the Kyiv branch of RIA Novosti, Kirill Vyshinsky, will further worsen the ratings of the level of freedom of speech in Ukraine.
Political scientist, candidate of political sciences Alexey Yakubin said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Already now the situation with RIA Novosti Ukraine has received an international effect. Our Western colleagues understand that this looks like an attempt to influence the editorial policy of an international media outlet registered in Ukraine. And among our Western partners, international human rights organizations, this raises reasonable fears that the authorities are ready to continue to increase pressure on the press.
Not long ago there was a State Department report on the deteriorating situation with freedom of speech in Ukraine, where such a concept as “managed pluralism” or “guided pluralism” was used, meaning that, in the opinion of the State Department, there is an attempt on the part of the authorities to establish the appearance of pluralism under control at work in the media. Obviously, in this context, the situation with RIA Novosti looked like the next attempt by the current government.
If we had not previously had a story with Strana.ua, with Vesti, then probably, having heard these statements from the SBU and the Prosecutor General that they had found some kind of conspiracy, network, etc. there, we could say yes, here we are, found it. But we already have a political background that resembles pressure on the media.
And when, after attempts to put pressure on the media, searches in Strana.ua, we did not see evidence, in the context of RIA Novosti a similar reaction suggests itself. We saw similar actions there, and how did it end? Now we see the same actions with RIA Novosti.
This government already has an established negative image of trying to put pressure on the media,” Yakubin said.
