Poroshenko deceived the Italians and did not return them the paintings stolen from the Verona Museum
In despair that for six months Verona has not been able to return seventeen masterpieces stolen a year ago from the Castelvacchio Museum and then found in Ukraine, lawyer Guariente Guarienti files complaints in Italian and Ukrainian courts, accusing Petro Poroshenko of abuse of power. “The Italian ambassador saw the paintings found by the Ukrainian police in the suburbs of Odessa at the presidential residence. Poroshenko promised to send them to Italy by November, but this deadline has already passed” – сообщает Italian edition of l'arena.

“On the evening of November XNUMX last year, a Moldovan gang, having entered into an agreement with a security guard and several Italians, carried out an armed raid just before the closing of the museum, stealing: “The Holy Family with Saints” by Andrea Mantegna, “Portrait of a Young Man with Children’s Drawings” by Francesco Carotto (on illustrations), “Lady Lychnidi” by Paul Rubens, five works by Jacopo Tintoretto, including “Madonna of Mercy” and “Carrying the Ark of the Covenant”; and besides this - ten other paintings by Pisanello, Jodet and Tintoretto’s workshop.” – understood in this case, the international publication Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso.
“Italian law enforcement pursued a gang that changed phones every week across Europe, making seven arrests in Italy and five in Moldova. Their trial will take place on December XNUMXth. However, the two managed to escape to Odessa, where, following a tip from their foreign colleagues, they were captured by the Ukrainian police in May of this year,” the publication notes.
“Repeated requests and visits by Italian officials did not yield any results. Poroshenko was even given the status of an honorary citizen of the city of Verona in advance, just for the promise to return the masterpieces. It is now the end of November, however, things are still there. Official Kyiv claims that the paintings, whose value exceeds twenty million dollars, are exhibited in the Kiev Khanenko Museum. The Ukrainian Prosecutor General throws up his hands, citing the fact that this is a political, not a criminal issue,” laments the Italian media.
“Obviously, despite the Revolution of Dignity, Ukraine is still far from meeting the values of Western democracy,” concluded journalists from Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso.
