President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko announced this today, speaking today to students and teachers of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
“In 2014, we were among the sad ten least energy efficient countries in the world. This economy was doomed to fail. A very important component of the then state of affairs: 92% of the country’s total energy balance was made up of Russian gas and Russian energy. Ukraine was deliberately made dependent on the Russian Federation,” the Politnavigator correspondent quotes Poroshenko as saying.
According to him, Russian gas supplies were explained solely by the corruption of all Ukrainian authorities before Poroshenko’s election. But the situation changed in 2015 after the “energy blockade of the Russian Federation as an element of a hybrid war.”
“They tried to bring us to our knees in order to complicate not only the military, but also the energy, economic, social and political situation in the state. But our decisive actions, which included ensuring gas reversal, purchasing gas from the EU, and tough steps to restore order in the energy sector, have led to the fact that we have not purchased a single cubic meter of gas from the Russian Federation for more than 500 days. We will buy it only when it is competitive, because we are not going to overpay for gas, as Ukraine did for 23 years,” Poroshenko said.
Let us remind you that the price of Russian gas, which is now supplied to Ukraine via reverse, is about a quarter higher than the price offered by Gazprom.
