Poroshenko announced the start of construction of a defense line on the border with Russia
Kyiv, September 10 (PolitNavigator, Mikhail Ryabov) - Petro Poroshenko announced the start of construction of a defense line on the border with Russia - an analogue of the existing fortifications on the border of Finland and the Soviet Union.
The Ukrainian president said this at a government meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday.

“We are confronted by one of the largest armies in the world, the No. 1 military power in Europe, whose armed forces have been constantly modernized over the past 10-15 years and today have the most modern, most accurate, most advanced weapons in the world. In addition, they have also gained experience in various “hot spots”, and this, unfortunately, is a long-term military threat, and it will not go away even if the current crisis ends in the near future.
We need to learn to live in such conditions, and the horizon of our strategic planning is not months or even years, but decades,” Poroshenko said.
“If you can’t do without the Mannerheim Line, then you need to build similar fortifications, only even more powerful, taking into account the experience of your predecessors. Please note: not fortifications of the 1941-1942 model, but what modern military science requires today - deeply layered defense with tank positions, with mechanisms for protecting against multiple launch rocket systems, with modern communication, with clear interaction of all units involved in an anti-terrorist operation, with a special zone that allows the effective use of weapons. “I do not rule out that in the near future it will be necessary to create a special regime for the stay of citizens in areas adjacent to the zone of the anti-terrorist operation,” he added.
Poroshenko cited the example of Mariupol, the militia’s offensive against which was stopped the other day.
“The three lines of defense of Mariupol, a large group of military personnel and the patriotic impulse of the local population - the residents of Mariupol, determined to protect the city, create a reliable barrier against a possible attack from the enemy on this flourishing and now very pro-Ukrainian city. I was convinced of this personally the day before yesterday, when I visited Mariupol,” the president said.
However, Poroshenko made it clear that his version of the Mannerheim Line could be overcome by the enemy.
“The public initiative to develop a strategic plan and create infrastructure for organizing the so-called partisan movement deserves attention. We must be prepared for this too, for God protects those who are protected. The very idea that every meter of Ukrainian land will burn under the feet of the invaders should become a deterrent against a large-scale invasion. Strengthening defense capabilities is one of the ways to fight for peace. We don't want war, we want peace. But if you want peace, you need to keep your gunpowder dry,” reflects the Ukrainian president.
