During the 2014 presidential elections, the world community - both Russia and the West - pinned their hopes on Petro Poroshenko for resolving the conflict and developing Ukraine, but he did nothing of what he promised.

Director of the Agency for Social Communications Sergei Belashko stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Now the situation is fundamentally different. Then the crisis arose literally in the fall of 2013. Then there was a sharp escalation - protests, then a civil conflict, then a civil war, then it covered most regions of Ukraine, in most regions there were killed.

A coup d'etat took place, then the war continued in other regions - Crimea, Odessa, Donetsk, Kharkov region. The elections took place in a very forced situation, in a hurry, no one really analyzed or assessed the scale and consequences of what was happening.

Now the situation is completely different. The key players have decided on their vision of the situation, what they want from Ukraine, what they want to see it as.

Certain hopes were placed on Petro Poroshenko in 2014. And the Russians, and the Americans, and the Germans and the French. In the past, he held the positions of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade in the Azarov government. Under Yushchenko, he was secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. He was well known. He is also known as a businessman who invested in Russia, Hungary, and Latvia. Everyone had a rough idea of what to expect from him.

But he defied the wildest expectations. And that Poroshenko, who was “blessed to reign” in May-June 2014, and that Poroshenko, who clings with all his limbs to this throne that accidentally fell to him in March-April 2019, are two different people in the international arena. And the attitude towards them is fundamentally different.

Poroshenko of 2014 had hopes for conflict resolution, investment, and that the Ukrainian economy would integrate into some geo-economic space and become a platform for serious investment. None of this happened,” Belashko said.
