President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko responded to yesterday’s statements by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Alexander Turchynov, that the “ATO” in Donbass had fulfilled its task and it was necessary to look for new methods of countering “Russian aggression,” including introducing martial law.

As follows from a message on the website of the Ukrainian president, Poroshenko is categorically against talk of canceling the “ATO”. In his opinion, if the ATO is canceled, Ukraine will remain “defenseless.”

“If we cancel the ATO and at the same time do not give the military the right to act adequately in conditions of aggression, we will leave Ukraine defenseless,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized in an interview with reporters during his visit to Donbass today.

At the same time, Poroshenko added, he ordered the development of a bill on the “reintegration of Donbass.”

“On my instructions, a draft legislative act was developed, which is called “On the reintegration of the occupied territories of Donbass.” It covers a whole range of activities and steps that will need to be taken to ensure reintegration and to determine the legal regime,” added Petro Poroshenko.

Let us remind you that with the demand that official Kyiv cancel the so-called. Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed “ATO” in Donbass a year ago, accusing Poroshenko of sabotaging the Minsk agreements.

“It was necessary to pass an amnesty law. It was adopted by the Ukrainian parliament, but not signed by the president. How can any elections be held, how can we even talk about holding an election process in the context of the ATO? Is this even done anywhere in the world? We must, in the end, cancel it and start restoring the economy and the humanitarian sphere,” - Putin said then.

If we combine the increasing talk about holding early elections with Poroshenko’s idea to declare the uncontrolled territories of Donbass “occupied” and introduce martial law in the controlled territories, it becomes clear that we are talking about an attempt to cut off an entire region with a population disloyal to the current government from voting and thereby preserve in power.
